Institute for Intensive English

Union County College’s Institute for Intensive English
Union County College’s Institute for Intensive English is a gateway to higher education for 1,500 non-English-speaking students annually. The IIE provides a full-time program of intensive instruction in English for speakers of other languages, serving students from more than 75 different countries. The focus of instruction is to enhance students’ English language abilities to further their academic, career, and/or personal goals. The Institute began as a pilot project on January 22, 1975 with 134 students and nine sections. Over the past 35 years, thousands of students of all ages have studied at the Elizabeth Campus-based IIE. As IIE Director Howard Pomann says, “Our students come with individual goals and aspirations. Through their studies at the Institute, these students have overcome their difficulties with the English language and as a result, have achieved their goals. Many of these students have continued their education at four-year institutions, some have become successful business owners, while others have continued in the profession that they had practiced in their own countries.” The Institute for Intensive English program provides an innovative curriculum, which focuses on student-centered methodologies, incorporates digital technologies, pairs ESL and content area courses, and provides opportunities for acceleration. The faculty are recognized statewide and nationally with numerous textbooks/journal publications and conference presentations.
