Chemistry Department Chair Sherry Heidary joined the College’s Hurricane Sandy Recovery Team at the Elizabeth headquarters on Thurs., Nov. 1 and worked throughout the weekend. Her primary objective was to contact all Chemistry faculty and make sure they were able to teach their classes. She also enlisted Student Government Association officers to help direct their fellow students whose classes moved from Cranford to Elizabeth. Prof. Heidary was especially impressed by the performance of the Chemistry faculty. Long before Hurricane Sandy came, the faculty had already established ANGEL shells to support their courses. That is, Chemistry faculty and their students were familiar with the use of ANGEL for communicating course materials. As a result, none of the scheduled Chemistry classes was canceled throughout the weekend and the following week. Most impressive was the 85 percent attendance rate for students whose Cranford classes were moved to Elizabeth. Prof. Heidary says, "I’m very proud of my department. The best thing too was being part of the Command Center team, the administration and my fellow department chairs. We were able to stay in touch our colleagues and help our students. We were a great team."
