Mathematics Department Chair Dr. Cynthia Roemer will accept the laurels as a Hurricane Hero under one condition: That this honor is conferred to her on behalf of the entire Mathematics department, which stood tall throughout the storm. Dr. Roemer’s experience seems like a "big blur" now, but while caught in the throes of Hurricane Sandy she spent full days on Mon., Nov. 5 and Tues., Nov. 6 ensuring that Cranford classes that moved to Elizabeth all had faculty. Moreover, every mathematics class had an online application either as a traditional ANGEL shell or a special "Hurricane Sandy" ANGEL shell. Professors Arlene Rogoff and Sam Zhang helped out at the Elizabeth Campus while Professor Linda Milteer oversaw the Plainfield math classes. Dr. Roemer also cited Andrew McDermott for his work throughout the weekend helping direct displaced Cranford students to their Elizabeth classes. "The department was outstanding, each and every faculty and staff member. They all should be commended," says Dr. Roemer.
