Vargas, Teresa

What Accounts Receivable Clerk Teresa Vargas recalls most vividly from her work on the Hurricane Sandy Recovery Team were the dozens of displaced people she met in the Kellogg Building Command Center. They were students and members of the community who lost their power and all communication with the outside world. They walked toward the light and electricity of the Elizabeth Campus where they were able to get warm and charge their phones and reconnect with friends and family. "Some had lost their cell phone and even had to borrow my phone to tell a loved one they were OK," she says. Teresa worked in Kellogg Command Center on Nov. 1 - 2. One of her tasks was to help staff the student "hotline," where she put her bilingual skills to good use. She then moved back to her customary post in Student Accounts in the Lessner Building on Nov. 5. She said the experience on the team was "spiritually fulfilling ... to be part of a group of people who came together to help serve the community."
