Dr. Alison Brown has been trained as an historian of ideas. As she begins her 20th year at Union, Dr. Brown loves teaching both history and philosophy since she regards each as central to what is every person’s lifework - problem-solving. She notes, "It’s better to do so with a good dose of reason rather than relying solely upon our feelings and happenstance." She views history as providing an essential context for the problems, issues and ideas that philosophy examines . Dr. Brown seeks to instill in her students a healthy skepticism. She says, "Often things are not what they appear to be and, in pursuit of answers and solutions, nothing is immune to doubt." Dr. Brown earned a Ph.D. and a master’s degree at Cornell University, and a bachelor’s degree at the University of Rochester.
