Meet Katie Lennon

New Providence, NJ

Age: 29

Are you a member of any club or student group?: Yes, I am a member of the track team. On May 10, 2013 I won gold in the 10,000 and 5,000 meter women’s races at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Championship Tournament.

Favorite Class at Union: Physics I

Most people shudder at the mere word, what makes Physics approachable and a favorite for you?: I enjoyed taking Physics because it explained why so much of what I observe everyday happens.

Why did you choose Union?: Its location was most convenient for me.

What is your fondest memory so far at Union?: My fondest memories at Union County College are of my trips to track meets with my teammates. I enjoyed cheering for them as they pushed through their races and getting to know them during our drives to and from our meets. I also loved racing against really tough competition. Doing so led me to run personal bests in the 5000 meter and 1500 meter races this year.

Interesting fact about yourself: I worked as a journalist for eight years.

What’s an interesting story that you reported on?: As a journalist, I wrote just about every topic under the sun. Working as a newspaper journalist for the first few years of my career and as a business journalist for the last four and a half years. I wrote on environmental clean-ups, land development projects, executive compensation, corporations' initiatives to become more environmentally and socially responsible, local and state elections, murders, plane crashes, lifeguard competition, and new education programs offered in New Jersey schools. I also wrote quite a few human-interest pieces, including a profile on a barber who cut hair in the same community for 60 years.

What is the biggest adjustment you had to make coming to college?: I am not sure how relevant this question is for me, because prior to enrolling in Union County College I graduated from another college with a Bachelor of Arts degree. The biggest adjustment I had to make upon beginning studying at Union County College was that I had to get in a car and drive five days a week. For several years prior to becoming a student a Union County College, I commuted to work via public transportation five days a week.

Career or further education goals: I want to be accepted into a Doctor of Physical Therapy program and practice as a Physical Therapist. Ultimately, I may try to start my own practice or establish a wellness center that offers Physical Therapy with some of my friends.

Is there anything else we ought to know about you?: Enrolling in Union County College in the Winter of 2013 was one of the first significant steps I took in my ongoing attempt to change careers. I worked as a Physical Therapist's aide during the past semester.
