Union's Women's Volleyball Team Defeats Brookdale
On Sat., Sept. 6, 2014, Union County College’s Women’s Volleyball team defeated Brookdale Community College, winning three games to two. The Lady Owls, with two returning players from last year’s conference winning team, were determined to start the season with a win. Union won the first match, in which second year setter Kianna Burrell, of Elizabeth, served ten winning points of which were two aces and she had 15 assists. Shannon Santiago, of Roselle, second year outside hitter, struck for Union with 16 kills. Aniyah Evans, of Rahway, a returning middle blocker, had seven kills. Union won the first game with a score of 25/15, the fourth game 25/22, and the final game 15/3. Notable statistics from the day, include Andreia Couto, of Union, who scored five points for the Lady Owls with her serving and passing during the second game. Ms. Evans earned Union another four points with her blocking skills. During the third game, six points were earned by Shannon Santiago’s one serve. In addition, new team member Kiyanna McMorris, of Rahway, had five blocks, and Brianna Flemming, of Roselle, earned 13 service points and had four kills. The Lady Owls will play Passaic County Community College at home on Wed., Sept. 10, 2014, at 7 p.m. The game will be held in the Gym at the College’s Cranford campus, located at 1033 Springfield Avenue.
