President Obama Proposed Making Two Years of Community College Free for Responsible Students.

Monday, January 12, 2015

President Obama announced an exciting community college proposal. America’s College Promise is a historic opportunity for our nation that will benefit nearly nine million students by making a higher education more affordable and improving the quality of education across America’s 1,100 plus community colleges. The proposal would allow students to attend community colleges tuition-free if they attend half-time, are making satisfactory academic progress to a degree and maintain a 2.5 GPA. To be eligible, community colleges would have to pledge to make their programs’ credits transfer to four-year institutions or lead to jobs in fields in demand, and states must commit to continuing existing commitments to higher education as well as provide a match to the federal grant.

•Save a full-time community college student $3,800 in tuition per year on average

•Benefit roughly 9 million students each year

Under President Obama's new proposal, students would be able to earn the first half of a bachelor's degree, or earn the technical skills needed in the workforce -- all at no cost to them.
